LinuxMeetingMinutes14Feb2003

Notes from the Feb. 14 2003 meeting, as taken during the meeting. Please feel free to jump in and correct, clarify, add, expand, etc.

Meeting was moved to L02 due to a flooding of the Technical Services Conference Room by a frozen sprinkler head in the room above.

Discussion started with talk of the underlying technologies (Darwin, etc) of MacOS X.

We then started with discussion of the MicrosoftCampusAgreement.

Idea of something "Green" - to help rally people - there are far more (10 times or more?) people interested in the environment than in Open Source vs. Proprietary software.

Importance of grassroots efforts.

Garages, closets all over town are filled with computers. How to use this old computer as a router, is a step in the right direction. Simple technologically, politically useful.

Discussion moved to WinCycle?, and how we can help Jesse Foote and all.

Talk with Jesse, Bill Hochstin, etc. about how to improve their operations, increase effeciency, help them sort incoming hardware.

What to do with the stuff that's less than 7100s, or whatever the cutoff is on the PC side.

We need to focus and pull together, get a weekly room, meeting time, location, set goals and project tasks.

3 Classes of projects:

Newbie help, on campus High-level help, experienced users General Area of information exchange, are we a closed group, or can anyone come in.

Bringing people in to speak with us.

Becoming a recognized student organization - COSO?

Working with TPTB? to get software ported, available for various operating systems.

Getting seniors involved? (Kendall, etc)

Advocacy, Installation Support, Application Support, Upgrading Wincycle, Porting, Call for CoSc? students, PKI/single signon, libraries, donating software to libraries, etc.

Turning this group into a 'technology-oriented' hobby group, perhaps. Is this more effective than a group pushing Open Source, more Linux-related things.

Key exchanges at the beginning of a meeting, perhaps.

Fridays at 3:00, perhaps, biweekly? Do most pre-planning via email list, then do focused work at the meeting. Sam has put in for space in Collis Center for the 21st from 2-3 pm. Exact space TBA.
