UNIX was created at AT&T Labs by two guys (also created C).

Notes

Recently (Beginning of 2003), SCO (who has control of the original UNIX source code) has filed suit against IBM. SCO claims that IBM used UNIX intellectual property? in contributing to Linux source code. Anyhow, it's a big mess, and there have been worries that the linux source tree (that is GPLed) was tainted.
