Information about the door lock system at Dartmouth

Who has control of what?

As brought up in my ComputerScience99 class, we were wondering if records were kept for who accessed what room when, and who had control over that data (how long it was stored, how could it be released, etc...)

I emailed some different people, and Stephen M. Cole (the "Access Control Supervisor", and a member of SafetyAndSecurity) forwarded me an email he had sent to another student:

Date: Jan.23,2003
From : The Dept. of Safety and Security
Subject : Access Control
To:

Dear ,
In answer to your questions about information obtained when a student uses his or her access card to enter an access controlled building.
When the card is used there is no personal information available unless a report is requested. All investigative reports involving college students can only be obtained through the Dept. of Safety and Security. These reports can only be accessed by an authorized supervisor within the department. Reports will only be used for investigative purposes when it is necessary to control criminal activity or to locate a student in case of an emergency.
The student information policy is regulated by FERPA ( Family Education Right to Privacy Act).
At the present time all reports are archived indefinitely. As the capacity of the archives declines this will change.Because the access control system on campus is still in it's infancy it has not yet been decided how long these reports will be kept in the archives.
Thank you for your interest. If the Department of Safety and Security can be of anymore assistance please contact me.
