HowToConfigureIMAPForBlitzmail
(AFAIK, Dartmouth doesn't currently have information available about configuring a IMAP email client to connect to the Blitzmail system. If you find a relevant website, please list it here...)
NOTE: as with POP email, your Blitzmail account may need to be moved from one server to another, thus "breaking" the settings on your email account.
If for some reason your
IMAP client just stops connecting at some point, try using
NetBlitz or
WebBlitz to connect to your email, send a message to yourself, and look at the headers to see what server you're on. Adjust your
IMAP settings accordingly.
Basics of Configuring
These instructions are based on how I set up
Balsa, but you should be able to adapt them to pretty much any
IMAP email client.
- Start the mail client, and open up the 'Preferences' or 'Settings' menu (On balsa choose 'Settings' -> 'Preferences')
- You have many choices, but first you should add a 'remote mailbox'. Here's how I configured the relevant fields for Balsa:
Mailbox Name | Blitz Inbox |
Server | bambi.dartmouth.edu |
Port | 993 |
Username | qubit |
Password | (left it blank) |
Folder Path | INBOX |
- Obviously, you'll need to fill in your own blitzmail server and DND name/password. Depending on the security of your machine, you may opt to store your password in the system for added convenience.
- I also checked the box at the bottom of the configuration marked "Use SSL (imaps)". AFAIK, Dartmouth is being secure and only supporting SSL-tunneled IMAP connections. (I'll check with people to see if this is the honest truth)
- In the main Balsa 'Preferences' window, there is a section titled 'Outgoing Mail'. In that section I set Remote SMTP server to be "bambi.dartmouth.edu:25"
- Because IMAP doesn't support the BlitzNotify program (hey -- anyone want to write one for Balsa or Evolution ?), you'll probably want to have your Inbox automatically updated on a regular basis. In Balsa, click on the 'Mail Options' tab in the main Preferences window. You'll see which text box to edit...
