What's this all about?
The Dartmouth LUG (
linux@dartmouthNOSPAM.edu) is hosting an "InstallFest" to help people put the Linux operating system onto their computers.
We will also be discussing the use of open-source and "Free Software", and would like to invite everyone who is interested in Linux, open-source software, or software development to come to the meeting.
Location and time
Extra Perks
- Free food! -- we will have soda, juice, and pizza.
- Door prizes! -- books, boxed CD sets of distros, maybe some more stuff .... :)
- Knoppix -- bootable linux CDs that don't require you to do anything to your harddrive.
I don't want to install Linux. Can I come anyhow?
Sure! The main purpose of the install fest is to get people interested in using Linux and free software.
Stop by, grab some pizza, and chat with us.
If you're interested in doing some programming, we have a number of different projects to help people use linux on campus, like
BlitzForLinux and
SidecarForLinux.
I'm going to bring my computer so that I can install Linux!
Great! To install Linux on your machine, plan to spend about 2 hours at the install fest.
You can do a fresh install of Linux, wiping the contents of your computer, or create a dual-boot system allowing you to use both operating systems. (your choice!)
Here's a checklist of things to do before you come to the event:
- Back up any valuable data that you have on your hard disk. There is a small chance that the install process will corrupt or delete files on the hard disk.
- You have 30MB of space to store your personal files on the ftp "potlatch" servers (strongbox/vault/locker)
- If your computer is equiped with a CD-R drive, you can use that to burn all of your personal files to disk.
- The HelpDesk may be able to suggest other methods of backing up the data on your hard drive.
- Defragment your hard drive, if you're interested in keeping the operating system currently installed on the computer.
- Bring all of your hardware:
- CPU
- Monitor
- Power cables
- Ethernet cable
- keyboard, mouse
- Surge protector/power strip
- Any other peripherals, such as joysticks, touchpads, etc...
- Speakers/headphones if you want to have the sound be configured.
- manuals for the video card, monitor, etc... so that we can configure the graphical environment.
- If you have a laptop, make sure to bring:
- CD-ROM drive (if it's external)
there will be more added to this page as we get closer to the event.
We hope to see all of you there!
