BSD, or Berkely Software Distribution, is one of the early unices that came onto the scene.

Now there are many different BSDs out there, most notably:

• NetBSD?
• OpenBSD?
• FreeBSD?

the core of Mac OSX is Darwin, which is a BSD variant.
