SPARCAndKeepingComputersTurnedOn
One of the primary ideas of SPARC is to get people to turn off their computers? when they are not in their rooms. Although turning off your computer can save energy, there are a few reasons to not turn off your computer:
- Remote access? -- many people share files? using AppleShare? or P2P applications. Most linux users will enable SSH access so that they can work on their machine remotely as well as transfer files to/from their machine.
- Distributed Computing -- some number of students engage in these projects that use spare cycles? on their computers to search for Mersenne primes?, a cure for cancer?, or even search for extraterrestrial life?. By keeping their computers on 24/7, they can contribute much more computer time to the project.
