ThingEncryption

Encryption, defined simply,, is the act of transfering some kind of information into a different (and usually unreadable) form.

Anyone interested in the mathematics of encryption should consider taking the number theory class Math 25?.

Encryption Methods

• Public Key?
  • RSA

• Private Key? -- also known as Symmetric Key?
  • Caesar cipher?, (aka Shift cipher?)
  • Block cipher?
  • DES -- used to protect BlitzMail passwords at Dartmouth (and very easy to break!)
  • AES

• • One time pad? -- an oddity: the "most secure" method known, (but has special requirements)
