The Dartmouth Name Directory was written a while back here at Dartmouth. It's available under the same license at the BlitzMail server (kind of open source/public domain? thing).
Who?
I believe that
Jim Mathews? worked on the
DND.

The protocol is located at:
Dartmouth wrote this along with the
BlitzMail system to keep a directory of students and faculty. It is used in conjunction with Blitzmail, and most other systems on campus (often in conjunction with our
kerberos system?).
