DirectConnect

Direct Connect is a file-sharing mechanism.

UPDATE:
It appears that NetworkServices has sent a Cease and Desist letter to Joseph J. Morales. For more information, see DirectConnectBanInformation

NOTE: (I believe Mr. Morales is the person that set up the first DirectConnect server).

I am emailing Joseph Morales, and hopefully going to have a bit more information to post on this website soon.

History

After the PacketShaper network tool was installed by NetworkServices, bandwidth for Napster and its brethren file-transfer programs was cut to such low levels that it was no longer viable to use such software.

An undergraduate student (name?) started the first DirectConnect server here on campus. This system is a direct PeerToPeer? setup, which does not require the use of an outside server (as opposed to Napster..). Therefore, (from what I heard), NetworkServices was not against the system as long as files were only shared over our fast intranet, and not shared over our commodity Internet connection.
