The GNU General Public License is probably the most widely used "free software" license of all time (as of 2003...)

The brainchild of RMS and the Gnu Foundation, the GPL was designed to help computer users? by providing a clearly-worded license that was focused on giving rights to the consumer rather than taking them away.


From the Preamble:

"The licenses for most software are designed to take away your freedom to share and change it. By contrast, the GNU General Public License is intended to guarantee your freedom to share and change free software--to make sure the software is free for all its users."1
