The African and African American Studies Department brings together professors from multiple departments.
"The African and African American Studies? (AAAS) Program is designed to provide all students at Dartmouth with an understanding of the historical, economic, political, social, and artistic experiences of people of African ancestry? in North America?, South America?, the Caribbean?, Africa and elsewhere. As such, the Program is multidisciplinary in approach, encompassing those courses from the humanities and social sciences? which are concerned with the heritage, experiences, and aspirations of Africans and people of African ancestry? in the Americas."1
