DistributedProofreaders

Distributed Proofreaders is a really neat? distributed project? that uses "human cycles?" rather than computer cycles? to proofread scaned pages of books as a part of Project Gutenberg.

The official story...

"Distributed Proofreaders was founded in 2000 by Charles Franks? to support the digitization of Public Domain? books. Originally conceived to assist Project Gutenberg (PG), Distributed Proofreaders (DP) is now the main source of PG e-books. In 2002 DP became an official Project Gutenberg site, as such Distributed Proofreaders is supported by Project Gutenberg."1

Join up!

You can join the fun and proofread a few pages each day by going to the website below.

All you have to do is sign up, read through the instructions on how to mark up the text (footnotes, illustrations, italic text, etc...), and then start proofreading.

If you're interested in this project and perhaps leading up efforts at Dartmouth (which could maybe include working with the Dartmouth library system to put a lot of our books in digital form), that would be awesome. Please put more information on this page, or make some more pages on the wiki. Enjoy yourself!!!

I (RobinsonTryon) made some pretty icons to support the DP project. Here's an example:
