FileTransferProtocol

FTP, or File Transfer Protocol has been one of the primary methods of transfering files from machine to machine around the Internet or on a local LAN.

Although anonymous FTP? is rather useful, in general FTP transmits your passwords "in the clear?", so that someone can easily use a packet sniffer and discover your password.

Secure alternatives to FTP include:

• SFTP -- Secure File Transfer Protocol, a part of SSH
• Kerberized FTP?
• SCP -- Secure Copy?
