HowToModifyPuTTYForCommand-lineSAS

(Part of the documentation for the BioEpi folks)

Big Idea

we're using PuTTY + a modified terminfo file to run command-line sas612.

This document is all about the modifications we do to PuTTY to make the keymappings work.

Here's an excerpt from my email:

take PuTTY, and create a bookmark that uses rxvt encoding for the Home/End keys and disables the App Keypad keys.

Then, ssh to belknap, and set environment variables:

setenv TERM vt220
setenv TERMINFO ~/terminfo
setenv TERMINFOADD /appls3/sas612/terminfo

So you create a bookmark for the remote machine with PuTTY, and then you click Keyboard in the menu on the left, bringing up the preferences for the keyboard.

In the box labeled "Change the sequences sent by:", make sure that the box 'rxvt' is selected under the heading "The Home and End keys".

Also, in the box labeled "Application keypad settings", make sure that the box "Normal" is selected under the heading "Initial state of numeric keypad".

When using sas, make sure that you turn the NumLock? on (otherwise you'll get strange symbols or arrow-key functionality, etc..)

Click on Session in the menu on the left, and then hit the button Save to save the preferences for this bookmark.

You can also go in under the menu Connection, and set the box named "Terminal-type string" to be 'vt220'. That should make it unnecessary to set your terminal type once you'd logged into cascade or polaris.
