Open Source Software is software that has been licensed under a so-called "open license?".

Although many different open source licenses? exist, some of the most popular are the GPL, BSD, MPL, and Perl Artistic License?.

Some licenses that might seem similar to open source licenses may be very restrictive of certain freedoms (e.g. Microsoft Shared Source? license).
