WeeklyMeetingFeb21y2003
- So, do we want to be an official student organization? (aka "Money is good")
- What do we need to do to become an organization?
- How many students need to sign up?
- What are the benefits?
- money?
- recognition?
- fame?
- PublicLinuxMachines -- a work in progress
- What's left to get done?
- Pro/Con
- What are the benefits of linux on public machines?
- problems? Are students going to be okay with this?
- unsupported movies? some files?
- What hardware do we have? what hardware can we get?
- What about different setups:
- Blitz terminal -- a machine that just offers email support. Might also include web, jabber, and SSH access (but that's pretty much it).
- General Public Kiosk Machine -- offers a bit more support. Might include Open Office, AbiWord, etc... as well as some other stuff
- Full-fledged workstation with "everything" available on a standard Win or Mac machine in a lab.
- The Student Assembly (thanks JaredAlessandroni & SamReisner) is collaborating with us on this project.
- GreenPrint, Sidecar, Kerberos, Blitzmail, etc... --- status and timetable for complete "Dartmouth" software available for Linux.
- What software do people want to see available for Linux?
- Who can contribute time and expertise to write software?
- The source for Sidecar that RobinsonTryon modified to creat Linux Sidecar? is not currently open, although Steven Cochran? (who could open the source) wants a "convincing reason" to open-source the software. Anyone have ideas?
- Alternative: Anyone interested in just writing an open-source implementation?
- What about a GUI interface for Sidecar and Kerberos? (see Sidecar For Linux GUI).
- How do we encourage Linux use? (this topic was originally listed at the WeeklyMeetingFeb14y2003, but not covered, so I'm bringing it up again).
- our website -- we need active contributors and maintainers
- Support and communication? -- chat: Jabber, IRC, ??
- The linuxUsers mailing list: how do we get more discussion and traffic?
- newsletter? -- perhaps in conjunction with our weekly meetings, we could have a few short blurbs about what's going on at Dartmouth (SamReisner mentioned interest of doing something w/Bulletins..)
