XBOX
The XBOX is a game console created by Microsoft.
What does this have to do with linux?
Linux folks have been interested in it because of the nice hardware inside and the relatively low pricetag.

Cracking a 2048-bit key?
Yes indeed. The people at
Project Neo? are trying to crack the 2048-bit
public key? that is used to validate software run on the
XBOX. There are multiple reasons to crack the key, including:
- It's fun to crack encryption schemes?
- Being unhappy with Microsoft and wanting to piss them off.
- A desire to run linux on the XBOX? without a mod chip?.
Despite effort to break the key, the strength of the cipher is far too great for us to use a
brute force? search to cover the entire
key space?.
AFAIK, people are currently testing different chunks of the
key space? and hope that we get lucky with our 'shotgun' approach.
Legality? -- It remains unclear whether or not people could get sued under current law for trying to crack they
XBOX key. It seems most likely that any suit would center around the
DMCA, probably with an "attempt to circumvent a
copy protection? device" argument (or somesuch).
