DoscAbout
We're the Dartmouth Open Source Community -- a group at Dartmouth College that promotes the use of open source software and open file formats.
Who can join?
Anyone! Most of us hail from the
Dartmouth Community, but there are several local residents who are active as well. Please feel free to join us at a
Dosc Weekly Meeting!
Who the heck are you crazy people?

What do you do besides promoting open source?
One of our main goals is providing support and unity to people running
open source software such as
Linux or
BSD. Those
operating systems are currently unsupported by Dartmouth, so we fill in the void.
Because most of us are running Linux, we're currently developing software and writing documentation to make it as easy to use Linux as a Windows or Mac computer. For more information on that topic, check out

History
In the fall of 2002
Sam Reisner and
Robinson Tryon, with the help of
Joe Hill, handed out fliers to freshmen at the
Freshman Computer Distribution. Having a 3' tall plush Tux definately helped to attract people.
The wiki went online shortly after that, and we setup the linux.dartmouth.edu domain to run some kind of server. We had an
Install Fest in December 2002, but dragged our feet a bit. The first version of
Sidecar for Linux was developed around this time.
Wanting to kick-start things, I (
Robinson Tryon) proposed
Dosc Weekly Meetings to make us concentrate on projects and promoting
open source stuff.
After a few meetings with people, and great contribution by lots of people including
Jeff Goddard,
Jared Alessandroni,
Tom Shemanske,
Alex Fergusson?, (and other people I'm forgetting), we started to get things rolling, and picked the current name of
DOSC.
That's the story so far, but I'm sure there will be more. We'd love to have you join us in creating a vibrant
open source community? here at Dartmouth.
