GreenIvy
"GreenIvy" is an idea for a wiki-like structure designed for the Dartmouth campus, but released as FreeSoftware for other schools or groups to use for putting a lot of information together.
What is GreenIvy?
A very extensive set of nodes about all aspects of tbe Dartmouth campus.
It will be written, linked, and updated primarily by the students themselves.
As a result:
- Thousands of smart young minds can help to keep a large amount of information up-to-date.
- Students can say what they want about any topic concerning anything at Dartmouth and beyond.
- Students can meet people with similar interests, collaborate on content, create new student groups, etc... all based on the information that they put in the GreenIvy database.
- Information will be available on every aspect of life at Dartmouth, accessible through full-text search and a nodular architecture that allows people to find out what they want to know more quickly.
Who can see it?
The entire structure would be accessible through the Dartmouth
LDAP/DND system. Outside users could log in anonymously, and might have slightly restricted write privileges. (Alumni would have roughly the same access rights as undergrads).
There would exist the possibility of outside users getting accounts for the
GreenIvy system if they weren't in Dartmouth's
LDAP directory.
What is it for?
Taking a bit of a wiki and a bit of the idea of
http://www.everything2.com,
GreenIvy would be a place (primarily) for Dartmouth students to put anything and everything that interested or concerned them.
Example Nodes:
- surrounding towns, campus life, blitzmail, frats, smoking, language drill, the HOP, the SnowSculpture?, how the endowment is being invested, how to paint your nails, how to paint your room, what did Kiewit look like?, what's a chubber?, who was catullus and did he play the cello?, etc....
- Every Dartmouth class ('03, '04, etc...) and every Dartmouth class (French 12, History 2, ComputerScience99, etc...).
- Historical events
- Poetry, Music a student wrote, personal Blogs, etc....
- Open Questions: How can I fix my speakers? Does anyone speak welsh? Where can I buy green socks? Is anyone else interested in a cooking show for DTV?
How does it work?
Ahhh. this is being filled in as we build the framework.
see
GrowingGreenIvy for more details....
So is it working yet?
Not exactly. Right now I (
RobinsonTryon) am planning it with lots of help from Jared and Sam.
For the moment, I'm using the Linux web on this wiki to put up content not only about linux, but about everything else concerning Dartmouth.... basically using the wiki as a test site for these nodes.
Feel free to add more stuff, and please email me/us (
linux@dartmouthNOSPAM.edu) to talk to us, offer suggestions, etc...
More stuff
- It might interface somewhat with the DartmouthDirectoryTree?, but we're not sure right now...
