NewNodularStructureTool
Basically, Sam and Jared and I (Robinson) have been talking about new wiki-like tools for the Dartmouth campus (and beyond!).
Although there is much overlap, here are some of the main projects/central goals to different methods of structuring:
- DartmouthDirectoryTree? -- A hierarchical structure of departments, classes, and services at Dartmouth.
- Everything would have parents and children (e.g. pages on the administration would be setup to model the actual hierarchy that exists in the real world).
- Nodes could have real content or just links to other pages (websites, etc...)
- Nodes would be "owned" by their real-world counterparts, who could set up the pages and the "children" of the pages to be readable/writable by whomever they designated.
- LinuxInformationBase? -- basically what we have here in the "Linux" web of this TWiki (as well as in the FAQ-o-Magic).
- GreenIvy -- a very extensive set of nodes about all aspects of tbe Dartmouth campus
- Examples: surrounding towns, campus life, blitzmail, frats, smoking, language drill, the HOP, the SnowSculpture, how the endowment is being invested, how to paint your nails, how to paint your room, what did Kiewit look like?, what's a chubber?, who was catullus and did he play the cello?, etc....
- This would be similar to http://www.everything2.com, but for the Dartmouth campus.
- Might interface somewhat with the DartmouthDirectoryTree?
- CreatingNewContentSystem -- plans on making a new system, organized so that we know what we want and what we are going to make.
General Concepts and Ideas
- Database backend
- probably just store node information and bits, content would be flat-file (rcs?)
-
- Most everything would be released under a FDL-style free-publication license.
- Some internal Dartmouth stuff might be set to be only readable on campus, but I can't think of too many things that couldn't be made public.
Anyhow, I'm going to work on the
GreenIvy concept a bit....
