The open source initiative is a group that maintains the "Open Source Definition".

"Open Source Initiative (OSI) is a non-profit corporation dedicated to managing and promoting the Open Source Definition for the good of the community, specifically through the OSI Certified Open Source Software certification mark and program." [1]

The Definition of "open source" (according to them) is available at this website:

Note that this definition may look suspiciously similar to the SPI's "Free Software Guidelines". This is because the Open Source Definition was created from the "Debian" version by the original author (Bruce Perens) with some help/comments from Debian developers.
